While out plein air painting today at Sea Cliff State Beach, we saw thousands upon thousands of Sooty Schearwater gulls circling and feeding on krill - the black mass you see in this photo shows some of the gulls in a feeding frenzy. Humpback whales also feed on krill and often accompany the Sooty Schearwater birds. The whales had been there earlier in the day. The Schearwater gulls migrate from New Zealand at this time of year to feed on our Monterey Bay krill - we live in an amazing place.. and get to paint here too:)
