Plein Air Painting Sites in Montana

St. Mary Lake - Off of Going-to-the-Sun Highway - Glacier National Park, Montana - Access through East Glacier

The above painting was done from this spot. To get there pass through the small village of St. Mary on your way to Logan Pass on the Continental Divide. As you drive along the shore of St. Mary Lake, look for Sun Point picnic and hiking area off to the Left of the road. Walk a short way down the hiking trail towards St. Mary Lake and you will find a huge view of serrated mountains, the Lake and vast landscape beyond.

East Glacier, Montana

Two blocks from highway 49 near a golf course. Look for Mountain Pine Motel on your right on Highway 49 - take the next Right turn until the road ends at the golf course two blocks away. Sweeping vistas of Glacier Park peaks, aspen covered slopes, interspersed with dark conifers all laid out in a 180 degree panorama. Paint from this area for the best view. There is a trail leading into the mountains. Beware of bears however so recommend saying on the road.

Site Amenities - close to coffee shops, restaurants and other comforts in East Glacier but still quiet and good for painting. You won't be bothered by tourists visiting your easel at this spot.
