Plein Air Painters from New England and other northern climates will love our selection of new plein air painting locations in various parts of The Sunshine State of Florida.
Key Largo - Harry Harris Park at Mile Marker 92.3 on the Overseas Highway (Route 1) - This is a wonderful small neighborhood park with water front views and good spots to set up your easel on jetties or on the beach. Morning painting time is recommended. Toilets available. Safe and secure if you are painting alone. Entry fee is $5.00. See photos below. I painted there at 7.30am - wonderful!
To Get there: Turn on Burton Dr. at Mile Marker 92.3 - follow the signs to Harry Harris Park a couple of miles at the most.
Curry Hammock State Park - Little Crawl Key, Marathon, Florida 33050
At Mile Marker 56.2 on Route 1 - Bathrooms, beach, kayak and wind surfing, camping available. A small park but worth it. Map shows location and facilities at this Florida State Park.
Islamorada, Florida Keys
A couple of miles before arriving at Islamorada in the Keys there are numerous places to pull off Route 1 and set up your easel. I did this and was able to paint in the shade of some mangrove trees with enjoyment. Take bug spray! and a large hat and sunscreen of course. Here is a photo from my painting spot - wonderful blue green turquoise water and fabulous skies. A good place to do a dead simple but fun play with color as the composition is basically sea and sky.
The Everglades National Park is a vast place with numerous different points of access. I visited this Park from Homestead in the East - Park Headquarters and Visitor Center is easy to find - just follow the brown National Park signs from Homestead going east.
I recommend proceeding to the Royal Palm visitor center and then taking the Anhinga Trail from there. The trail is paved and also on boards up above the water. It allows for viewing of mangrove areas as well as the Sawgrass Prairie habitat that is dryer. If you are into painting birds, this is the place for you, as they seem very tame and pose nicely close up.
Toilets at the visitor center. No food or drinks available except water, so take your own with you. Bug spray/insect repellent is a must of course.
If painting with oils, be extra careful not to spill or otherwise leave toxic stuff anywhere. The environment in this park is beautiful and we want to keep it that way.
Ocala area in Central Florida. The Ocala area is home to beautiful horse farms, The Silver River and Ocala National Forest.
Ocala - Silver River State Park
Silver River State Park is located east of Ocala, one mile south of State Route 40 on State Route 35. Dozens of turquoise colored springs and miles of beautiful trails offer many great painting sites. For overnight stays, there is a full campground and 10 luxury cabins - fun for a plein air group painting retreat maybe.
Sholom Park - Ocala
different trails offer varied views of ponds, azaleas and formal
gardens. A great place to paint flowers and water reflections. The Sholom Park Pond
in particular is a great painting spot with a deck overlook. Water
lilies and many different water plants provide that Monet motif we all
love so much. Koi fish swim in the tranquil clear waters that offer
fantastic reflections of tall trees and sky.
