Plein Air Painting Sites in Massachusetts

Nauset Lighthouse, Cape Cod

Location: Cape Cod National Seashore - Nauset Light Beach, east coast of Cape Cod

Nearest town: Eastham

Accessibility: The grounds are open all year, and the lighthouse is open during open houses in season. (Please note: In the summer, the Cape Cod National Seashore collects parking fees until 4:30 p.m. each day. Therefore, be prepared to pay Cape Cod National Seashore for "Daily Parking" if you arrive before 4:30 p.m.)

Parking can be difficult in this location especially during the Summer season. Park at the Nauset Light Beach parking lot - bathrooms available at that location.

Best time of day: Either early morning or late afternoon. The painting above was done in Summer at about 4pm.

Windmill Park, Orleans, Cape Cod, Massachusetts

As you enter the village of Orleans in Mid-Cape area you will see a large Dutch-style windmill in a grassy park area right next to the ocean. It is a wonderful spot to do a windmill painting or Cape Cod shoreline painting. Parking is readily available if you go early - I was there by 7.00 am one Summer morning. Nice and quiet then too.

Race Point - on the Hook of Cape Cod

Drive through Provincetown right to the end of the road on Route 6 - a great spot to do beach paintings, people on the beach paintings or wide open ocean and sky paintings. You can also look back at Provincetown across the water.

This is a very exposed location with no shade of any kind or wind protection. Plan accordingly. Bathrooms available at visitor center.

Whately, Massachusetts

Whately Library - Whately, Mass.

Whately is a small town located off I-91 near Old Deerfield. The great painting spot is at the town library where you have views of the Connecticut River valley or just paint the path that runs besides the main street, which is called North Street.

This location provided by: Michele Hausman.
